Savannah’s “Creative Coast” is brimming with….what else, creativity! We’ve got more than 60 art galleries (that’s 3x more per-capita than NYC) and we’re chock full of music, film and the performing arts.
Savannah has long been a home for artists, writers, musicians and countless other creative types. From student-run spaces with informal showings, to formal galleries hosting nationally-recognized artists – art lovers can definitely get their fill in Savannah. Many galleries even work together to host monthly “First Friday” gallery hops and there are constant opportunities to expose yourself to art in a variety of mediums and genres.
To boot, the Starland Design District, established in 1998, is an Urban Renewal Neighborhood Revitalization project centered on the the old Starland Dairy Property and has become one of the new hubs of creative activity, from art galleries to web design shops.
Students and staff of the Savannah College of Art and Design have certainly expanded our local creative and techie talent pool. But, they are not the only ones. Georgia Southern University’s Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art offers 10 undergraduate degree programs and Armstrong Atlantic State University’s art programs also enhance our artistic flava’.
Savannah also offers theaters, music and stage productions from classic ballet to modern hip-hop. With three historic theaters in Savannah’s downtown and other independent venues popping up (check out the relatively new Savannah Actor’s Theatre), stage producers, actors, dancers, musicians and the rest have their pick of inspiring places to perform. The Savannah Jazz Festival, the Savannah Film Festival, and the Savannah Music Festival have grown in scope and popularity every year. And, they do an awesome job of introducing fresh, creative talent from both near and far.
